There was a huge face off by striking workers and the police as tear gas was fired in the air.
Confusion reigned in the various terminals of the Nairobi International airport as their little or no information about their flights.
Some passengers were already at the airport waiting for long hours when media reports circulated that flights for grounded till further notice.
Police resorted to arresting union officials for inciting the workers and hence the brawl which led to the tear gas release.
Travelers were later asked by the police to leave the building and gather at the parking and waiting areas outside the airport.
The workers who had not given notice of their labor action beforehand are angry about the planned partial takeover of the airport operated by state-run KAA by national carrier Kenyan Airways.
The workers are however afraid of losing their jobs when the takeover finally holds.
