A military court earlier in the week upheld the 15-year jail term handed the brother of former Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika and two ex-intelligence officials.

62-year-old Said Bouteflika who suffered a stroke in 2013 was known to be the real brains and power behind the president as he served as a lowkey presidential aide.

The sentences were the highest in profile among the strings of arrests made on high ranking members of Bouteflika’s cabal.

The four defendants were accused of having met in March 2019 in a bid to derail plans by the army high command to force the departure of Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The court after much deliberations upheld the 15-year jail term with sources saying the trio were lucky not to get an additional 5 years for failing in their appeal ploy.
