Crime Law

A court in Egypt has over the weekend acquitted two sons of Hosni Mubarak; former Egyptian president over a case involving stock exchange manipulation.

Having been arrested since September of 2018, Alaa and Gamal Mubarak alongside other defendants were freed of any wrongdoing in the case.

Among those acquitted with them was prominent businessman Hassan Heikal, son of the late writer Mohammed Hassanein Heikal.

The “stock exchange manipulation” case as it is known in Egypt dates back to 2012 when Egypt’s state prosecutor referred the six suspects to court “for illegally obtaining more than two billion Egyptian pounds ($128.5 million)”.

There have been legal proceedings against Mubarak and his relatives since the removal of the Egyptian president in 2011.

His sons were accused of Profiting and obtaining illegal finances from the sales of a bank. This verdict, therefore, puts an end to judicial proceedings against the Mubarak family.
