Burna Boy Wins Best International Act at the 21st Annual BET Awards

The 21st Annual BET Awards which took place on Sunday, 27th of June, 2021 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, United States saw Burna Boy winning the Best International Act. This makes him the first African artiste to win the BET Awards for three consecutive years since 2019.

Others who were nominated for the Best International Act award alongside Burna Boy included; Wizkid, Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania, Aya Nakamura from France, Headie One, Young T & Bugsey from the United Kingdom, Emicida from Brazil, and Youssopha from France.

The award was hosted by American actress, Taraji P. Henson. Megan Thee Stallion was the biggest winner at the 2021 BET Awards bagging over four awards in different categories namely; Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Best Collaboration: Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion – “WAP”, Viewer’s Choice Award: Meghan Thee Stallion featuring Beyoncé  – “Savage (Remix)”, and Video of the Year: Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion – “WAP”.

Other winners at the award include; Beyonce who won the Viewer’s Choice Award for “Savage (Remix)” featuring Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B who won Video of the Year and Best Collaboration for her song “WAP” featuring Megan Thee Stallion; Sportswoman of the Year award won by Naomi Osaka, Sportsman of the Year– Lebron James, Album of the Year: “Heaux Tales”- Jazmine Sullivan, Best Female R & B/ Pop Artist – H.E.R, Best Male R & B/Pop Artist– Chris Brown, Best Male Hip Hop Artist– Lil Baby, Best Group – Silk Sonic.

Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/ Inspirational Award – Kirk Franklin “Strong God”, BET HER Award- SZA “Good Days”, Video Director of the Year – Bruno Mars & Florent Déchard, Best Movie- Judas and the Black Messiah, Best Actress – Andra Day, Youngstars Award – Marsai Martin and Chadwick Boseman winning a posthumous award for Best Actor.

Queen Latifah was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

There were live performances from Jazmine Sullivan, DJ Khaled, Kirk Franklin and Rhapsody.

The BET Awards is an American award show, established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. The awards are presented annually, and are broadcast live on BET. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by various artistes.

Burna Boy winning the Best International Act at the BET Awards is a win for Nigeria and Africa at large.
